Opening Ceremony

Join the official start of the 2nd International Low Flutes Festival. Remarks by festival founder Chris Potter will be followed by the world premiere of Subduction for low flute choir by composer Jonathan Cohen.

The Lower Realm Flute Choir and the Metropolitan Flute Orchestra feature works for low flute choir by Jonathan Cohen, Paige Dashner Long, and Franz Liszt.

Headliner Workshop

Swingin' with Ali: The Jazz Style

10:30-11:30 am

Join Ali as she unlocks the “mystery” of the jazz style. A fun and interactive workshop, Ali will explain and demonstrate the “real-deal swing feel”, jazz flute articulation, and more. Then, have fun playing along with Ali and her rhythm section (backing tracks). See the workshop packet below for workshop materials including PDFs of her latest jazz flute solos, all based on familiar jazz standards. Before the workshop is over, you’ll be sounding like a seasoned jazz improviser!

Workshop: The Beatbox Contra

1:00-1:30 pm

Join Yu-Tai Cheng in a fascinating beatbox workshop exploring the best resonance techniques in the contrabass flute. Yu-Tai will provide real-time beatboxing, demonstrating on his contra, while teaching how to best approach beatboxing on a large flute.


Workshop: Fun with Harmonics

1:30-2:00 pm

Erick Ruyle presents an interactive workshop exploring the use of harmonics. Various exercises will be demonstrated, including scales, thirds, and simple melodies, to enhance our practice of harmonics with fun and creativity.


Performance: Contemporary Gems

Featuring Gavin Stewart, Lisa Bost-Sandberg, and Rie Shimizu performing solo works for bass and alto by Rebecca Saunders, Joseph Klein and Kensaku Shimizu. George Pope and Friends, Wendy Stern and Paige Dashner Long and Ensemble will be on the program presenting pieces by Nicholas Puin, Adrienne Albert and Paige Dashner Long.


Presentation: A Tribute to Sharyn Byer

Join Chris Potter and Mariana Gariazzo for a showing of the original videos edited by Jonathan Cohen of Jonathan’s A Love Letter to Sharyn. This will be followed by a discussion of what to expect when commissioning a piece and the process of how to to have a piece written for you or your group.

Bass Flute Competition Finals

Join us for the first International Low Flute Festival Bass Flute Competition final round featuring finalists Maria Fernanda Castillo, Judy Diez d’Aux, Ikuko Ioka, Kaori Kimura, and Yuko Okubo play works by Daniel Dorff, Adina Izarra, Daniel Kessner, Marin Marais, Mike Mower, and Gary Schocker.


Play Along with Paige Dashner Long

Paige Dashner Long will lead the Thursday session with her compositions Bach to the Fluture, Flutenado, Contrafusion and Dancing Dessert Suite among others. Paige is an internationally recognized flute choir director, contrabass flutist, and an Altus Artist. She directs the Metropolitan Flute Orchestra in summer residence at New England Conservatory, the Daytona State College Flute Choir and the Florida Flute Orchestra.


Thursday Night Gala Concert

A diverse repertoire of all new compositions for low flute. Featured performers in the opening Gala Concert include Paige Dashner Long, George Pope, Carla Rees, Wendy Stern and Alexa Still.

Presentation: The Low Flute Project

Through commissioning, recording and performing, Lisa Cella is curating a body of works that shatter boundaries in sound and technique for alto and bass flute. This lecture recital includes the performance of works by the winners of the 15 Minutes of Fame Competition.

The National Flute Association Low Flutes Committee, the Florida Flute Orchestra and Chris Potter's Alto and Bass Flute Retreat Ensembles perform compositions by Corelli, Ravel, Liszt and Paige Dashner Long.

Workshop: Playing the Basso Continuo on the Bass Flute

Patricia George will lead this participatory masterclass exploring how to play the basso continuo on the bass flute. Telemann Suite in A Minor (flute choir version) and other early music repertoire and style will be discussed and examined.

Join Colombia-based flutist, Carmen Marulanda, in an interactive workshop exploring musically stimulating new resources for low flute players. Carmen will introduce her practice books, Traversuras for Flute and Piano + Play-Along Collection published by Liliflute Music; a book series that provides progressive work on sound, intonation, and phrasing.

Presentation: The Music of George Crumb

Crumb was an early champion of the low flutes. Using commentary from interviews with George Crumb, this presentation explores Crumb’s use of the alto and bass flutes in his compositions and demonstrates how the features of both instruments are uniquely suited to depict programmatic themes ranging from animals, nature, space, environmentalism, and even death. Discover these hidden gems in the low flute repertoire!

Jonathan Cohen, whose business card describes him as the bald technical guy, will wow us with his compositions Love Letter to Sharyn, Tango Molto Basso, Legend of Llyn Llech Owain, Marshal the Metal, Valley Dawn and Big Flutes Happen Here. An electrical engineer by training, Jonathan’s chamber and flute choir pieces are performed regularly at NFA conventions and around the world. He plays his contrabass “Tiny” with Flutes on the Brink and Flute Cocktail.

Saturday Night Gala Concert

The last Gala Concert of the festival invites us to reflect on the versatility of low flutes. Our final two headliners are ILFF founder Chris Potter and Swiss flutist Matthias Ziegler. Chris will be playing pieces by Anne Boyd, Mike Mower, Hans Sitt and her own composition WaveSong. Matthias will be performing his own compositions.

Performance: Bass Club

It is all about the bass! The Bass Club program features bass flute performers Aaron McGrew, Adrian McGrady, Mikio Oku, Kana Shirai, and Teruhisa Neishi. Works by J. S. Bach, Katherine Hoover, Hikaru Hayashi, and Mario Lavista.


Workshop: Creating a Playground for Deep Practice

9:00-10:00 am

Wendy Stern shares creative strategies to approach learning and mastering of our music-making. Topics will include breathing, finger facility, and memory. Bring flutes of all sizes, a water bottle and a straw!

Chris Potter will be leading us through her arrangements of Funeral March of a Marionette, Corelli’s Adagio from The Christmas Concerto, Ravel’s Bolero plus her Tres Ratoncitos Ciegos (Three Blind Mice) and Beverly Troup’s arrangement of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. Chris was Festival Director of the 1st International Low Flutes Festival in 2018 and is the author of international publications the Alto Method and the Bass Method. In 2022, her acclaimed Alto and Bass Flute Retreat celebrates its 18th year in the USA.


Closing Ceremony

We bring the festival to a close with performances by our festival headliners Chris Potter, Ali Ryerson, Matthias Ziegler and Yuko Hoshi and the Japan Jazz Flute Big Band. Announcements about ILFF 2024 and our traditional performance of the Valse de bravoure from Voices from the Deep by Alexandra Molnar-Suhajda.
